She began her career after winning a local beauty contest and becoming a finalist in the 1996 Elite Model Look contest. Alves initially pursued civil engineering at Londrina State University before transitioning to modeling.

Her international modeling career took off after moving to São Paulo and then Paris, where she worked as a fit model for Yves Saint Laurent. Alves gained significant recognition with her appearance on the cover of Vogue Italia in 2002, photographed by Steven Meisel.
